1. Gather Your Inspiration

Inspiration for your wedding can come from anywhere and doesn’t have to be wedding related. Don’t limit yourself to wedding magazines or wedding images on Pinterest or Instagram. Look further afield.  Interior design, nature, your favourite restaurant, or film can be great places to get ideas to create your wedding style.

2. Choose Your Venue

It is a good idea to secure your wedding venue before creating your wedding design. The venue you choose sets the tone of your wedding therefore it is important to choose one in keeping with the style of your day whether it be traditional, rustic, modern or fairytale.

3. Set a Budget

Work out how much you can afford to spend or are happy to spend on bringing your wedding design ideas to life.  Decide what is important to you and keep track of your spending.

4. Design Your Colour Palette

Choosing your wedding colours is an essential part of your wedding planning.  Your chosen colour scheme is the anchor for your wedding and will go a long way in ensuring that every element of your wedding is in keeping with your chosen style and creates a cohesive look throughout.

When designing your colour palette make sure that it will work with your chosen venue.  You want it to compliment and not clash with the venue aesthetics.

Another factor to consider is the time of year that you will be getting married, this will influence the colours/shades of colour that you choose.

5. When You Have Chosen Your Wedding Style, Stick To It!

There are so many styles and you may have a few that you like however, you want your wedding to look like it is a part of the same day/theme and not a mismatch of styles. Whilst there are no hard and fast rules relating to mixing styles this must be done with caution.

6. Consider The Details

“The details are not the details. They make the design” Charles Eames

Your design details can include an aisle runner, dance floor, linen, cutlery, glassware, centrepieces, chairs, entrance, altar, lighting, dessert display, cake table, backdrop, place cards, table settings, table numbers, signature cocktail, seating chart, photo booth and……

The list is endless, what else could you include?

A Wedding Designer focuses on the detail to create something special that perhaps you may not have been able to do on your own.  Learn more about what a wedding designer does here!

7. Invest In Elements That Are Multipurpose

Weddings can be expensive, one way to stretch your wedding budget is to invest in design/decor items that you can use at both the ceremony and reception.

You can breathe new life into the ceremony items by arranging them differently at the reception.

Think about using design elements such as floral displays and props at both your ceremony and reception.

8. Make Your Design Personal To You

Your wedding should feel like you as a couple. It should reflect your tastes, style and personalities. You want your guests to say “it was so them”. A wedding designer can help you to achieve this. How? Take a look here!

9. Add Texture To Your Design

Adding texture to your design will elevate your wedding aesthetic.  Mixing textures will add dimension, create visual interest, and give your wedding the “wow factor”.   Look at mixing and matching your place settings, adding lush florals, asymmetrical layered table settings, textured linen, a ceremony arch with a mix of materials, there are so many ways that you can add texture.  Be bold and creative ensuring that the look you create is cohesive.

10. Create Focal Points

Focal points are a great way of drawing the attention of your guests to where you want it to be.  They also create interesting features and stand out backgrounds making your photos amazing.  Focal points are also a great way of communicating your wedding style/theme.

They can include your aisle, framing the area where you exchange your vows, brides’ bouquet, head table at your reception, eye catching entrance, table seating plan, bar area, cake table and of course your guest tables.

11. Define Your Wedding Aesthetic

Choose 3 descriptive words to define your wedding aesthetic.  Use these words to guide the choices and decisions that you make.  Think about how you would like your wedding to look and feel.  Here is an example, elegant, simple & beautiful.

12. Be Unique/Original, Don’t Replicate

It’s very easy to see a wedding that you love and say “this is what I want” however, don’t focus on creating something you’ve seen done already.  Use other weddings for inspiration only.  To make a design unique to you, take elements from those weddings and put your spin on them, make them your own.  Focus on your uniqueness as a couple and create a wedding that reflects you!
